The Big Red offense had been quiet all game long with the exception of the long run by Pettigrew but a long kick off return by Pettigrew set up what would be the game-tying score. The Cadet defense came up big as Greuey managed to stop Bellaire quarterback Luke Heatherington at the 34-yard line on fourth down to turn the ball back over on downs to the Cadets.Īnother long punt (52-yards) by Greuey early in the final quarter pinned the Big Reds deep in their own territory and after another Cadet defensive stop, Riddle returned a punt 39-yards to give the Cadets excellent field position at their own 12-yard line.įort Frye was unable to get the ball in the end zone but instead settled for a 25-yard field goal by Tytan Waller to increase their lead back to eight points at 15-7. Riddle caught a pass from Huck and broke several tackles while pulling some Bellaire defenders forward for extra yardage but somehow the Big Red defense was able to knock the ball loose and recover at their own 45-yard line. “He can really flip the field in a hurry and he had a couple of huge kicks tonight.”īellaire snuffed out a Cadet rally late in the half when defensive standout Logan Edgar intercepted a Huck pass and the Big Reds held on to the slim 7-6 lead at the half.Īfter a sluggish end to the first half offensively, the Cadets looked more like themselves in the third quarter as they opened the second half with a 80-yard, 11-play drive that saw them retake the lead on a 2-yard sneak by Huck.įor the second straight time the Cadets tried for the two-point conversion and once again the Big Reds held to keep the score at 12-7,Īfter forcing another stop on defense the Cadets took possession of the football and were on the move one more time before turning the ball over for the second time. “You don’t usually see a weapon in a punter but he (Greuey) is a weapon,” said Huck. Greuey punted three times in the game for an average of 54.7 yards. The Cadets were forced to punt and after a nice return by Pettigrew they moved the ball back into Fort Frye territory before turning the ball over on downs.Īfter Fort Frye failed to get a first down on their next possession, punter Clay Greuey came up with a huge 67-yard punt that sailed all the way into the end zone and flipped the field position into the favor of the Cadets. That lead would last all of one play as Pettigrew made amends for his turnover by breaking lose on a 78-yard touchdown run on the next play from scrimmage and the extra point by Jayson Lemley gave the Big Reds a 7-6 lead.įort Frye caught a bad break early in the second quarter when Huck’s 75-yard pass to Matthias Kesselring for what appeared to be a touchdown was called back after penalties were whistled on both teams. The Cadets put together a long 71- play drive that culminated with Clayton Miller hauling in a nine-yard touchdown pass from Huck to give them a 6-0 lead. Bellaire had moved the football into Fort Frye territory on their opening possession but the Cadets were able to strip the ball away from Big Red running back Mac Pettigrew and sophomore Blake Wheeler recovered to give the ball to the Cadets at their own 29-yard line.
